Hops news World: World hop acreage expected to decrease by 500 ha this year

The official acreage data for the major hop growing countries USA and Germany have been published recently. According to these, world hop acreage will not decrease as much as expected by the International Hop Growers' Convention (IHGC) in April.

World hop acreage will decrease by 500 ha (- 1%), primarily caused by the declining US hop acreage, HVG said in its latest report this week.

According to the German Hop Growers' Association, hop acreage in Germany remained almost unchanged (2021: 20,620 ha; 2022: 20,604 ha). There were some small changes in varieties: while hop acreage of Herkules, Polaris and Perle rose, almost all other varieties decreased.

According to the USDA, hop acreage in the Pacific Northwest region in the USA decreased by approximately 400 ha (- 2%) to . The high alpha varieties CTZ and Phato declined by almost 800 ha which is very interesting and surprising.

According to HVG, US hop growers seem to continue to withdraw from the high alpha market. This is probably due to the economic preference of US flavour hops and the weak euro.

The increase in high alpha acreage in Germany cannot compensate the US decline, so the total decrease in high alpha production amounts to approximately 5%.

The German flavour hop market has been oversupplied for some years. Therefore, German hop growers reduced flavour hop acreage.

Classic aroma varieties also tended to be oversupplied and acreage was slightly adjusted.

Hersbrucker is an exceptional aroma variety. It is tight in supply but a decrease in acreage could still not be prevented.

The market for Perle (the biggest German aroma variety) is stable, as is acreage.
